May 7 - May 8th- May 9th

Weather: Cloudy- rain clearing mid tour with sun.
Boat: St. Herman

We only had one trip today and we took the group up to Berner's Bay. We got a great view of about 7 humpback whales feeding. Including 2 cow and calf pairs! Feeding behavior seen - deep terminal dives (Fluke) and shallow diving (no Fluke). Somehow we got positioned in the middle of all this feeding activity!

We also saw Stellar Sealions, harbor seals and eagles.

Weather: Misty in the morning with clearing and sunshine in the afternoon.
Boat: Morning St. Herman, Afternoon St. Maria

Not as many whales in Berner's bay today... but in the am we saw a cow and calf pair (shallow feeding - no flukes) We got a great view of Blue Mussel Cabin and Echo cove. On the way back to Auke bay we also saw stellar sealions - lots of them - being very noisy on Ben, Island.
Eagles... harbor seals.

Afternoon trip- I was training a new naturalist...
We saw 2 whales in Berner's bay (shallow feeding- only 1 fluke shown in 30mins). Stellar sealions on Ben. - one was so HUGE! And it's "sealion mane" was very obvious! very cool to see! We also saw an eagles nest next to the Blue Mussel cabin.
Very Sunny Trip!

May 9th, 2007

Weather: Misty in the morning with clearing and rainbows in the afternoon.
Boat: Morning St. Herman, Afternoon St. Maria

The morning trip was more of the usual- Eagles, Stellar Sea Lions, 2 Whales (Fluking)

Afternoon Trip: ORCA!! Yahooo.... A large pod of resident orca. We also saw Eagles, Stellar Sea Lions and a Humpback Whale- But the coolest part of the trip was viewing the Orca- one Large male with at least a 6ft dorsal fin swam right next to the boat! I saw several smaller females with calfs in the distance as well as at least one other male. The rain had just cleared and a rainbow was painting the sky as we cruised along side the traveling pod of killer whales.

Great to hear things are going so good. Being in that feeding activity must have been fun. Thanks for explaining the diving/fluke relationship, otherwise I probably wouldn't know what you were talking about?! Sea lions and seals are nice but are there any sea otters up there? I like otters a lot more than, as you put it... those noisy sea lions!!
